Empowering young people in Cat Ba to use film and photography to explore their lives and communicate with others to build self-esteem, new skills and outlooks
Funded by the World Bank
In partnership with CSAGA and anthropologist, Zoe Dawkins, we trained 16 young people from Cat Ba Island, Vietnam, how to use consumer digital cameras with a film function. They made short 1 -3 minute films about their lives and shared them with their community and others on the internet through file sharing sites
Chiang Mai Film Unit
Thailand
2001
Over a period of two weeks we facilitated a group of vulnerable young people including young offenders to make a 20 minute film about their lives set in a fictional context. The young people acted, devised the story and operated the cameras. The film was later premiered in Chiang Mai attended by the whole crew and an invited audience.
Later evaluative research carried out by healthcare professionals suggested that the participants' self-esteem and mental health had noticeably improved as a result of their involvement in this project.
The effective use of media tools such as film and photography has become an essential part of the development practitioner's tool box. However, mastering and applying them effectively can take time and effort not normally built into resource planning. We can help you utilise approaches like photovoice, effectively and train you and your colleagues in other new community media methods.
